SurveyMonkey's Growth Story

SurveyMonkey was founded in 1999 by Ryan Finley. Ryan worked at a music production company in Madison, Wisconsin, and he wanted to gather feedback from customers. He realized that there wasn’t a tool available that could quickly and easily capture feedback, so he created one. SurveyMonkey was born.

In 2005, Ryan decided to move the business to Portland. He and his brother, Chris, packed up their servers, hopped in a truck, and drove across the country. Fast forward to 2008, and the business was doing so well in terms of users and revenue Ryan realized they needed to bring in an experienced CEO. Along came Dave Goldberg. It was at that point that the company really began to evolve from just a survey tool to a data platform.

Today, SurveyMonkey has 700 employees and 25 million users, including 99% of the Fortune 500, academic institutions, organizations and neighborhood soccer leagues everywhere. Every day, more than 3 million survey responses are gathered on the SurveyMonkey platform.
